Titanium sheets. Any thickness. From a single source.

How we developed a custom vacuum clamping table to precision-
grind non-magnetic sheets from 0.2 mm to exact specification.

The Forte range is a compact design with large Z travel, direct access to the work piece is further supported by the ergonomic working height of the machine table. This one has an integrated zero point system.

Background

There are countless material alloys, sheets in various formats and thicknesses – but rarely exactly what is actually needed. The result: order material from one supplier, send it elsewhere for cutting, and again somewhere else to grind it to the required thickness.

Multiple steps, multiple handovers, long lead times – all before the actual work can even begin.

The Challenge

This problem became especially pronounced with titanium sheets in the Grade 5 alloy. The complex back-and-forth between suppliers, cutting services, and grinding operations led to long delivery times and unnecessary complexity.

There was also a technical hurdle: clamping non-magnetic sheets requires a precise approach. A wrong setup here costs quality at the end – and when tolerances are measured in thousandths of a millimetre, there is no room for compromise.

“The complex back-and-forth between suppliers and processors costs not
just time – it costs precision.”

The Solution

We took matters into our own hands: raw material is now sourced directly, and formats and thicknesses are produced in-house. No external dependencies, no lost time.
The key was a custom-designed vacuum clamping table. It enables precise fixturing of even very thin, non-magnetic sheets – the fundamental prerequisite for achieving tight thickness tolerances and consistent flatness across the entire format.

The result: a fully controlled process from raw material procurement to finished sheet – in exactly the thickness required.

The Result

Today we are able to produce a wide range of materials from 0.2 mm thickness – in any desired gauge, with no dependency on standard thicknesses such as 1.5 mm, 3 mm, or 4 mm. Depending on format size, we achieve thickness tolerances of up to +/− 0.002 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

From what thickness does Wild Wetzikon produce titanium sheets?

Wild Wetzikon produces sheets from 0.2 mm thickness in various material alloys, in any desired gauge. This removes any dependency on standard thicknesses such as 1.5 mm, 3 mm or 4 mm. Depending on the format size, we achieve thickness tolerances of up to ±0.002 mm. Which thickness is possible for your part is something we clarify from your requirements.

Which thickness tolerances are possible with titanium sheets?

Depending on the format size, we achieve thickness tolerances of up to ±0.002 mm. This accuracy in the thousandth-of-a-millimetre range leaves no room for compromise in production. The basis is the precise fixation of the sheets on our in-house designed vacuum clamping table. The tolerance actually achievable depends on the format and is agreed beforehand.

Why is grinding non-magnetic sheets demanding?

Non-magnetic sheets such as titanium cannot be clamped magnetically, which makes the clamping technology especially demanding. The wrong approach costs precision, and with tolerances in the thousandth-of-a-millimetre range there is no margin. The solution was a self-designed vacuum clamping table that also fixes very thin sheets precisely. It is the prerequisite for tight thickness tolerances and consistent flatness across the entire format.

What advantage does single-source manufacturing offer?

Because raw material is procured directly and formats and thicknesses are produced in-house, external interfaces and long waiting times fall away. Previously, the back-and-forth between suppliers, cutting services and grinding operations meant long lead times and unnecessary complexity. Now the process is fully controlled from procurement to the finished sheet. You receive the sheet in exactly the thickness you need.

Which materials can be produced as sheet?

In addition to Grade 5 titanium, a wide range of material alloys can be produced as sheet, each in the desired gauge from 0.2 mm. The in-house development of the vacuum clamping table also makes thin, non-magnetic materials manageable. This means you are not dependent on available standard formats. Which alloy and which format you need is something we clarify from your enquiry.

Wild Wetzikon produces titanium sheets in Grade 5 and further alloys from 0.2 mm in any required thickness. Depending on format the production achieves thickness tolerances down to ±0.002 mm, held on a purpose-built vacuum clamping table. Raw material, format and grinding to size come from a single source.

Titanium sheets in any thickness from a single source

Wild Wetzikon produces titanium sheets from 0.2 mm thickness in various alloys, in any required thickness. This removes the tie to standard thicknesses such as 1.5 mm, 3 mm or 4 mm. Depending on the format size we achieve thickness tolerances down to ±0.002 mm. Which thickness is possible for your part we clarify from your specifications. Accuracy in the thousandth range leaves no room for compromise in production. The basis is precise fixation of the sheets on a purpose-built vacuum clamping table. The specific tolerance achievable depends on the format and is agreed beforehand. Across the entire format, even fixation ensures a constant flatness, even on very thin sheets.

Non-magnetic sheets such as titanium cannot be held magnetically, which makes the clamping technology especially demanding. A wrong approach costs precision, and with tolerances in the thousandth range there is no leeway. The solution was a self-built vacuum clamping table that fixes even very thin sheets precisely. It is the basic prerequisite for tight thickness tolerances and an even flatness across the whole format.

Because we source the raw material directly and produce formats and thicknesses in-house, external interfaces and long waiting times fall away. Previously the back and forth between suppliers, cutting shops and grinding shops meant long lead times and unnecessary complexity. Now the process from procurement to the finished sheet is fully controlled. This shortens the lead time and makes quality plannable.

Besides Grade 5 titanium, a wide range of alloys can be produced as sheet, each in the required thickness from 0.2 mm. The in-house development of the vacuum clamping table makes even thin, non-magnetic materials manageable. This means you are not dependent on available standard formats. Which alloy and format you need we clarify from your inquiry.

Complete manufacture from a single source covers procurement of the raw material, production of format and thickness, and the final grinding to size. Because all steps lie in-house, coordination losses between several operations fall away and the lead time stays plannable. This is a tangible advantage precisely for special thicknesses and small batch sizes.

Titanium sheets are used, among other things, in medical technology and the watch industry, where tight thickness tolerances and an even flatness across the format count. For every batch we document the values achieved and supply material certificates on request. As a precision grinding shop from Wetzikon we have manufactured to drawing since 1969. Send us your specifications for alloy, format and thickness and we prepare a no-obligation quote.
